Trying to explain “arisan” to a foreigner :
A social gathering with limited membership (relatives, classmates, neighborhood, ex-coworkers) Usually consists of 20 up to 30 people. They meet once a month and in every meeting member would put money of the same amount in a pot and then draw a lottery. The one who wins the draw will collect the money. The following month they will do the same except that the one who already wins will not participate in the draw. The meeting is either held at home, hosted by the winning member, or at a restaurant where the bill is shared by everybody. Originally the purpose of this gathering is to strengthen friendship and brotherhood among its members. Money is not the main objective, it just serves as a little incentive to encourage member to attend the meeting. Now arisan expands to businessmen as a means to raise capital.
